Yeah, no. I know that part of the MW entry repeats that mistake, but other parts correctly point to it deriving directly from 'amir as used by the Norman Sicilians, who had no "'amir of the sea" position at all but did have a series of influential "'amir of 'amirs", an entirely separate concept that was only subsequently limited to naval commanders.
